The record appearance holder for the Liverpool Women wasn’t shy with her frustration after another Derby loss.
Sunday’s Merseyside Derby at Goodison Park did not end well for Liverpool. Even with Everton struggling this season, sitting last in the table pre-match, it’s a derby and we all knew what kind of match lay ahead of us.
Matt Beard made a couple of changes in the lineup, bringing on Teagan Micah (finally) and Hannah Silcock, as well as Fuka Nagano to make her return back from injury. All of these changes, and yet the Reds fell to a 1-0 defeat at the hands of a contested penalty after Nagano fouls an Everton player about a yard outside of the box. For all of it’s issues, it’s the kind of thing that VAR should’ve been around to correct.
“Everyone is gutted, of course we had the decision go against us but also there’s a lot of things within the game that we can do better,” defender Gemma Bonner said following the match.
“We know we’ve got so much quality within the squad and it’s about trying to bring that to the forefront, and ultimately, finishing the chances is going to help us do that.”
One of the biggest challenges that the Reds have yet to overcome is finishing their chances when they make them. The final third has been a mess, and with Sophie Roman Haug out until after the winter break, something else is going to have to change to help the Women find goals.
“I think we’ve been saying that for a few games that we’ve had this year.
“We’re creating the chances but it’s just not going in for us. We know we’ve got the quality of goals within the team, we tried to change it up in the second half. I’m sure once we get that goal, the others will come.
“I thought we did a lot of positive things today and we started well, we got after them. We had a lot of chances but ultimately at the top level you’ve got to put the chances away and make them count.
“So of course we’re frustrated, disappointed. But we’ve still got a few big games coming up before the Christmas period. It’s up to us to make sure we keep working hard in training and make sure the next result is the right one.”
Liverpool visit Newcastle Women next Sunday, November 24, for their next match in WSL action. They are currently sixth in the table, which isn’t terrible, but after a stretch of losses and draws, a win would be really nice.
