'From what I hear': David Ornstein says Liverpool are now set to do something 'brave' in manager search

Liverpool are currently on the lookout for a new manager ahead of Jurgen Klopp leaving Anfield at the end of the season.

The Reds boss stunned the football world earlier this year by announcing that he is going to step down in the summer.

There have also been departures behind the scenes at Liverpool, although replacements have already been sourced.

For instance, Michael Edwards has become FSG’s CEO of football, and Richard Hughes is set to become Liverpool’s sporting director in the summer.

With regards to a new manager, plenty of names have been doing the rounds, with one in particular dominating the rumour mill headlines.

Obviously we’re talking about Sporting Lisbon head coach Ruben Amorim, who very much seems the favourite at this moment in time.

However, David Ornstein has stressed that the Portuguese is not a shoo-in, and Liverpool are conducting a thorough search.

What has David Ornstein said about Liverpool manager search?

“Amorim is in the mix, as has been well documented, but we’re told he is not a shoo-in or a nailed-on first choice at this stage,” Ornstein said on The Athletic.

“Liverpool are said to be conducting a genuinely thorough and broad process that has also highlighted alternative candidates.

“Those involved in the search will be finishing due diligence on those candidates and from what I hear they should be in a position to make more concrete advances on whoever emerges as their top target pretty soon.

“Incoming sporting director Richard Hughes and FSG CEO of football Michael Edwards, we’re assured, won’t be afraid to look beyond the obvious names if others fit their criteria — and they’re prepared to be brave over popular.”

It’s good to hear that Liverpool are keeping their options open and undertaking a very diligent process in pursuit of finding a new manager.

Although Amorim seems like a great shout, there could well be other coaches around – maybe some whose names aren’t doing the rounds yet – who could be even better suited to Liverpool.
