'For me': ESPN pundit thinks 44-year-old manager may be even better for Liverpool than Xabi Alonso

Janusz Michallik has predicted that Xabi Alonso will be the next Liverpool manager, but actually believes that another name may be even better for the Reds.

Of course, the Reds will now be stepping up their search for Jurgen Klopp‘s successor. Klopp shocked the football world last week by announcing that he will be leaving Liverpool at the end of the season.

For many, Xabi Alonso would be the perfect candidate for Liverpool. Alonso played at Anfield and also played under a number of the world’s best managers during his illustrious career. He has also started his managerial career brilliantly, leading Bayer Leverkusen to the top of the Bundesliga table.

Roberto De Zerbi may be better for Liverpool than Xabi Alonso

Speaking on ESPN, Janusz Michallik has suggested that he would expect Alonso to take the role on Merseyside. However, he added that he could see Liverpool being better off appointing Roberto De Zerbi.

“Xabi Alonso is number one. De Zerbi very, very close. In some ways for me, De Zerbi would’ve been better. But Xabi Alonso is number one,” he said.

“If Xabi Alonso’s not the one, I could see absolutely De Zerbi being up for Liverpool or Barcelona. Because he’s got a great network, shoestring budget is no problem, no problem rotating and risking young players as we know. He’s going to be the man who could be enticed.”

Reds will certainly consider Italian in their search

De Zerbi has certainly be an outstanding addition to the Premier League. There would have been real concerns when Brighton appointed the Italian as Graham Potter’s replacement after his appointment at Chelsea.

De Zerbi’s tenure began with a 3-3 draw at Liverpool. And Brighton have gone from strength to strength during his time in charge. The Seagulls will surely be well aware that a time will come where he takes that next step in his managerial career.

Liverpool will seriously consider the 44-year-old given the size of the task ahead of them. Whoever replaces Klopp has got a huge job on their hands. And it would be natural to look at everyone who is impressing right now.

De Zerbi should most definitely be in that conversation.
