Liverpool Legends take on AFC Ajax Legends on Saturday with the former striker likely the most noteworthy returning star.
With club football on hiatus, as has often been the case during the March international break Liverpool will hold their biggest charity match of the season with an LFC Legends team set to take on an AFC Ajax Legends squad at Anfield on Saturday.
Of all the returning Reds, perhaps none is as noteworthy as former star striker Fernando Torres, with the Spaniard making his first appearance for the Legends team.
“I can’t wait,” Torres said as he prepared for the upcoming match. “It’s been a long time and I’m really looking forward to it. I’m really looking forward to going back to the city and the stadium and meet the supporters and see many of my old teammates.
“I can’t wait to wear the Liverpool shirt again in front of the Kop. To play back at Anfield is very special. A lot of memories, probably for my best years playing football. It’s a special place, so I can’t wait.”
While it will mark the first time Torres has put on the Liverpool shirt for a game since he left the club back in January of 2011, it won’t be his first time back and linking up with Steven Gerrard as the 40-year-old played a charity match at Anfield back in 2015.
That game provided something of a moment of closure for Torres and the Anfield faithful following a difficult parting of ways, and expectations will be for a warm welcome on Saturday.
“I’m sure Anfield has changed, but the heart is the same,” Torres added. “I’m sure the connection from the fans is the same. It’s a special place, special people. I’m sure the spirit is still the same—or even bigger because the club has been doing great.”
