Liverpool defender and Celtic cult hero Virgil van Dijk has admitted he told the Hoops scouts to sign Andrew Robertson during his Parkhead stint.

The Bhoys signed Van Dijk in 2013, spending two years at the Scottish giants before moving to Southampton in 2015.

The Reds picked up Robertson from relegated Hull City for a mere £10million in 2017.

And the Scotland captain went on to be one of the best bargains in recent Premier League history.

However, things could’ve been different had Celtic followed through on Van Dijk’s advice.

The Liverpool and Netherlands ace spoke about Robertson to Gary Neville on Sky Sports show The Overlap.

“Robbo is a fantastic player, a pleasure to play with, passionate,” said Van Dijk. “He is one of the leaders in my opinion.

“He is the captain of Scotland and I played against him playing at Celtic when he was at Dundee United.

“Funny enough I was saying to our scouts that we should get him at Celtic.

“But he went on to Hull, but just in general playing with him has been incredible.

“I’m hard to him but he’s hard to me and we have that relationship where we want to get the maximum out of each other.

“Outside the pitch he’s one of the funniest guys in the team and always up for a laugh.”

What could’ve been

When Van Dijk joined Celtic in 2013, Robertson had just sealed a free transfer to Dundee United.

A year later, he was on the move to Hull City for around £3.3million, where he stayed for three years.

Although Celtic were flying at the time anyway, you can’t help but wonder what more they could’ve achieved with Robertson in their ranks.
