‘Fabulous’: Ilkay Gundogan says manager who is on Liverpool’s shortlist is such a ‘great coach’

Ilkay Gundogan has raved about former Germany and Bayern Munich boss Hansi Flick – a manager who’s reportedly on Liverpool’s shortlist.

Liverpool have already been linked to a host of managers ahead of Jurgen Klopp’s departure this summer.

Xabi Alonso seems to be the obvious choice at this stage given his links to the club and the brilliant job he’s doing at Bayer Leverkusen.

But the Reds will be considering their options ahead of the summer and Hansi Flick is reportedly on their shortlist of managerial candidates.

The 58-year-old has recently been linked with a move to Barcelona as Xavi prepares to step down at the end of the season.

And while reacting to rumours of Flick making the switch to Camp Nou, former Manchester City star Ilkay Gundogan has praised his old boss.

Gundogan raves about ‘fabulous’ Flick

Speaking to La Vanguardia, Gundogan was asked directly about the German being linked to Barca.

“There are a lot of names coming out and that’s not my league and I won’t comment on that,” the Barca midfielder said. “I can only say that Hansi Flick is not only a fabulous guy but also a great coach, as he proved by winning the treble for Bayern.

“He came to the national team in a very difficult situation, but he was always genuine and I respect him a lot.”

Of course, Flick worked with Gundogan during his time as Germany boss but was dismissed from his role back in September.

Before managing the German national team, Flick delivered a treble at Bayern Munich, which included winning the Champions League.

While many Liverpool fans would probably favour a move for Alonso, the former Bayern boss would represent an exciting option for the Reds.

Flick has proven himself at the very top level in club football and also plays an exciting brand of football.

Should a move for Alonso fail to materialise, they could do a lot worse than hiring a man who’s already won Europe’s most prestigious club competition.
