'Excellent': BBC pundit seriously impressed by what £36m Liverpool player did v Luton in the first half today

Liverpool are battling away against Luton Town this evening in what’s proving a difficult game for the Reds in the opening 45 minutes.

Jurgen Klopp’s side know full well a tough night awaits for them and it’s been exactly that so far. The home side are being their usual resolute selves and the Reds are struggling to break them down.

To do so, Liverpool might need a bit more from players who perhaps don’t venture forward too much to throw off the Hatters’ backline.

And watching on for the BBC, Mark Schwarzer was impressed by Ibrahima Konate trying to do just that in the opening 30 minutes.

Speaking on comms for the BBC, former Middlesbrough stopper Schwarzer liked what he saw from Konate trying to influence the game.

“Ibrahima Konate does really well. That run from way deep in his own half was excellent and just when you he lost possession he managed to stick out a long leg of his and push it in the path of Mo Salah,” Schwarzer said.

More of this needed from Liverpool

Quite clearly, Liverpool are going to have to be patient in this one against Luton and it might take a strange moment or a big moment of quality to change things.

This sort of break from Konate might also be key. Liverpool have got to do something to disturb Luton’s set up and getting defenders to advance with the ball into the other half is a good way of doing that.

Konate is capable of bringing the ball out of defence and he showed in this example he can produce a pass as well.

Jurgen Klopp will be looking for a bit from his players and as mentioned, it might take something from a Konate or Van Dijk to tip the balance.
