Liverpool are expected to land a new sporting director ahead of appointing a manager this summer.
That is according to reporter David Ornstein, who claims that Liverpool will let their new sporting director choose the new boss.
Big changes are coming at Liverpool with Jurgen Klopp leaving the club this summer – and he is taking his coaching staff with him.
Much of the focus is on a new manager but Liverpool will also need to find a new sporting director.
Jorg Schmadtke has left the club following the January transfer window and Liverpool must identify a replacement.
David Ornstein on Liverpool sporting director search
It’s difficult to get the timing right on these two appointments.
Liverpool won’t want to get one appointment secured and then find hat they don’t really get on board with the other one.
The Athletic’s David Ornstein has now told The Athletic Football Podcast that Liverpool are now likely to appoint a sporting director before landing a manager.
In fact, Ornstein claims that Liverpool want to be moving forward with that appointment ‘pretty soon’, possibly even in the next week or two.
Ornstein notes that Michael Edwards has been approached to return to Liverpool, but he doesn’t seem so keen.
Ornstein adds that the new sporting director will be given the power to lead Liverpool’s managerial pursuit, rather than FSG running things from Boston.

“We’ve reported on Michael Edwards having been approached by FSG and Mike Gordon on a phone call, in which he politely declined the opportunity to return to Liverpool or take an even bigger role within FSG, but has John Henry finished scratching that itch? Could he still go for Michael Edwards? I don’t know, I suspect that they’ve got to either make a quick decision – or Michael Edwards make a quick decision – or Liverpool and FSG move on.”
“I think what Liverpool will want to be doing now is doing some groundwork on the manager, so that as and when they appoint this sporting director, they have got options to put in front of him – it’s almost like he’s able to hit the ground running, but everything I hear is that the sporting director will lead the managerial process from Liverpool, not something that is steered out of Boston,” he added.
Liverpool have been linked with a number of names for this role.
Ricky Massara and Florian Ghisolfi were mentioned last week whilst West Ham United’s Tim Steidten is in the mix.
The Reds seemingly want to make considerable progress on this appointment in the very near future, with a top target being kept under wraps as FSG look to strike a deal.
