Sean Dyche’s Everton are now trying to sign Florentino Luis, a player Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool have had their eye on.
That is according to journalist Ben Jacobs, who has reported on X the kind of deal that Everton are trying to do for Florentino.
So, what has been reported about Everton and Liverpool target Florentino Luis? Let’s take a look.
Everton trying to sign Liverpool-linked Florentino Luis
Well, Everton have now joined Merseyside rivals Liverpool in the race for Benfica defensive midfielder Florentino Luis.
Photo by Gualter Fatia/Getty ImagesIn October 2023, journalist Graeme Bailey said on the 90min Talking Transfers podcast, that Liverpool and Manchester United are scouting Luis.
The reporter noted Liverpool “like” the defensive midfielder “a lot”. United have been impressed as well.
While we have not had any reports of Liverpool actually trying to sign Florentino, as you can see below, there is now a new rumour that Everton are really keen on the 24-year-old defensive midfielder.
Journalist Ben Jacobs has reported on X that Everton “hold a genuine interest” in the Benfica midfielder.
The Toffees are exploring a potential loan deal for 24-year-old Portuguese player, who, according to former Benfica coach Joao Tralhao, is “an amazing boy, a hard worker, calm, professional, always prepared to listen and he is a proper team player.”
My View: Florentino Luis to Everton unlikely to happen
In my opinion, Everton are unlikely to be able to sign Florentino Luis on a loan deal before the January transfer window closes this week.
First of all, Florentino may not be too keen on joining a team that could get relegated to the Championship at the end of the season.
While Everton, who have been linked with West Ham United’s Said Benrahma, have a good squad, we cannot escape the fact that they have lost three of their last four Premier League games and are only a point above the relegation zone.
Secondly, Florentino will be fully aware of the Merseyside rivalry between Everton and Liverpool. So, if he played for the Toffees for a few months on loan, then it is unlikely that the Reds would try to sign him in the summer of 2024.
And finally, Benfica themselves may not be keen on offloading Florentino in the middle of the season. After all, they are aiming to win the Portuguese Primeira Liga title.
While the defensive midfielder is not a regular in the starting lineup, he is an important player in the squad, and Benfica may not be willing to offload him, and that too on just a loan deal.
