The duo discuss their friendship and how it feels to break into the first team.
Am I pitching some sort of Northerner and Southerner buddy comedy series? I don’t know, am I?
Harvey Elliott and Curtis Jones participated in a joint interview for the official site to talk about their long standing friendship and what they each bring to the first team.
Curious eyes are always on the new young hopefuls to see who could be one of the lucky ones to break into the first team and even make a place for themselves. Scouser Jones has worked his way through the Academy and slowly but surely carved out a spot for himself in Jürgen Klopp’s midfield. Elliott made history by being the youngest ever Liverpool player to start in a competitive match when he was only 16 years and 174 days old. Since then, he’s improved and found himself earning more minutes with each passing season.
Asked to describe the contributions of the other, Jones said of his pal, “I think I saw [Jamie] Carragher saying about him being a super-sub, that’s good and Harvey has influenced games off the bench, but he is one of those that the more he plays, the better he becomes, whether that’s starting or off the bench.”
On his position, Jones explained, “Now he’s able to play as a half-space No.8 or off the right, he can play on the left, he can play as a No.10, he’s a gifted lad and he’s shown that definitely.”
About Jones, Elliott praised his work off the pitch.
“He’s affecting games in many ways,” Elliott said. “Cody said it in an interview the other day, the guy works so, so hard off the pitch, and not many people can see it, but I think in his performances it shows. The whole of Liverpool is so proud of him, and hopefully he can keep going and playing the way he is.”
Jones stated that though Elliott is one of his best friends, he considers all of his teammates his friends.
“It’s a younger team – I feel like I’m one of the more experienced ones, and I’m 22! – but I feel it’s a team full of lads who are just really, really close, and I’d actually say mates. I’m sat here with Harvey, who is one of my best mates, but I could be sat here with Trent [Alexander-Arnold], Dom [Szoboszlai], Cody [Gakpo], Ryan [Gravenberch], Kostas [Tsimikas]... I could name near-enough the whole team as a friend in different ways.”
It’s nice to have confirmation that some of the new members of the team are getting on well. It probably helps that Liverpool currently sit at the top of the table and remain in all four of their competitions. With all of those games, there’s plenty of playing time to go around and plenty to feel good about.
