Eamon Dunphy has heaped praise on Liverpool skipper Virgil van Dijk after Sunday’s League Cup final victory.
Virgil van Dijk scooped the Player of the Match award at Wembley after netting the winner for Liverpool in extra time.
It was an all-round brilliant display from the Dutchman, who led by example in what was a memorable win for Jurgen Klopp’s young side.
Van Dijk’s performance has led to praise from Dunphy, who has admitted the Liverpool skipper’s leadership skills proved him wrong on Sunday.

Speaking on The Stand, Dunphy admitted he has been critical of Van Dijk in the past but was left impressed after the final.
“One other thing that the Liverpool victory reflected was surely the great spirit in the club,” the pundit said.
“And fair play to Van Dijk, both of us have been a little bit critical of him and doubted him a little bit and he certainly is fond of himself, but he and the other senior players that were there, Andy Robertson would be a good example of that, there weren’t many of them.
“The very fact that those young lads can come into the team, feel part of what they’re about, be respected, speaks to a culture in Liverpool Football Club where everybody is respected and there’s no big-time Charlies in the dressing room.”

The 32-year-old is undoubtedly an ‘outstanding’ leader and has taken to his new role as captain brilliantly.
With Klopp turning to several youngsters in extra time due to absences, Liverpool needed the likes of Van Dijk to step up at Wembley.
He did just that and more while he was also unfortunate not to open the scoring in the second half after a controversial offside decision.
