Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher has deemed Roberto De Zerbi a suitable contender for the Reds manager’s job alongside Xabi Alonso.
The Anfield icon, writing on Sky Sports, feels the Brighton & Hove Albion boss has done a “fantastic job” and, like Alonso, has got his club punching above their weight.
Liverpool will have a new manager in the Anfield dugout next season after Jurgen Klopp announced he would be leaving at the end of the campaign.
The 56-year-old, whose Reds contract was due to run until the summer of 2026, attributed his decision to “running out of energy”.
No sooner had Klopp made the announcement, football fans, journalists and outlets the world over have been speculating who could take over at Anfield.
Bayer Leverkusen’s Xabi Alonso has emerged as the main candidate as he is an Anfield cult hero and has been brilliant at Bayer Leverkusen so far.
As far as Premier League managers go, De Zerbi is also in the frame after the sterling work he has done on the south coast.

The 44-year-old has been a revelation at Brighton thanks to his impressive brand of attacking football, not to mention the world-class recruitment that the Seagulls are now becoming famous for.
Carragher wrote: “The other one I look at [alongside Xabi Alonso] is Roberto De Zerbi at Brighton, who has done a fantastic job.
“The thing that stands out about them as well, which always stood out about Jurgen Klopp, was that Jurgen was always able to be successful, without being at the biggest spending of teams.
“You look at what Xabi Alonso is doing at Bayer Leverkusen, competing with Bayern Munich.
“You look at what De Zerbi is doing trying to compete with other top teams in the league, and has done really well especially last season.”
While it’s a huge shame that Klopp will be leaving Liverpool, there is a silver lining in that the club has known for a while and has likely already started the process of bringing in a successor.
De Zerbi would certainly be a great shout for the Reds. Over the coming months there will likely be a lot of speculation on this front, so let’s see who enters the frame and who Liverpool will be pursuing.
