113 Paul Merson has named Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah as one of the most underrated players around.
The pundit was speaking on Jeff Stelling’s Football’s Greatest Podcast, and he was tasked with naming the five greatest foreign imports in Premier League history.
As you can imagine, Salah was very much in that conversation, and while the Egyptian didn’t make Merson’s top five list right now, the pundit says that he’ll definitely be on there in a few years’ time.
Merson was full of praise for Salah, claiming that the winger doesn’t actually get the credit he deserves for his ability most of the time.
Salah doesn’t get the credit
Merson spoke highly of the £34m man.
“I would say 100%. I don’t think he gets the credit he deserves, he’s one of the best players in the world. We talk about figures, stats, assists and goals. Last season Arsenal pushed City all the way, Saka and Martinelli were unbelievable, but Liverpool didn’t even qualify for the Champions League and he scored more goals than them put together, that’s how good he is, and again this season he’s started off,” Merson said.

Merson is spot on, Salah doesn’t get the credit he deserves most of the time, and that shines through even in Merson’s own list.
Merson put the likes of Gianfranco Zola ahead of Salah on his list of greatest imports, and that’s doing the Egyptian a huge disservice.
Yes, Zola was a fantastic player, but Salah is a three-time Golden Boot winner, a Premier League champion and a Champions League winner while Zola, with all due respect, never hit those heights in the Premier League.
In fact, Zola’s best scoring season saw him score 14 goals – Salah has never scored that few in a season with Liverpool.
Salah is an incredible player, and he deserves more credit for his ability and the legacy he will leave behind.
