168 John Aldridge has admitted he was surprised to see Darwin Nunez miss out on Liverpool’s starting lineup at Arsenal.
Jurgen Klopp’s side suffered a 3-1 defeat at the Emirates Stadium after a lacklustre performance.
Liverpool headed into the game in exceptional form following emphatic wins against Chelsea and Bournemouth in the league.
But they were largely outclassed by Arsenal on Sunday, with Mikel Arteta’s side limiting them to just one shot on goal.
Many were surprised to see Darwin Nunez drop to the bench with Cody Gakpo starting.
The 24-year-old had managed five goal contributions in his last five league games heading into the clash at Arsenal.
And Liverpool legend John Aldridge cannot understand why Nunez didn’t start in a huge title clash.
Aldridge stunned after Klopp’s Nunez decision
Writing in his latest column for the Liverpool Echo [page 40], Aldridge questioned Klopp’s decision to drop Nunez to the bench.
“Don’t know why Darwin Nunez didn’t start against Liverpool,” he wrote. “Liverpool obviously had a couple of key players out, but if you’re fit enough to be on the bench, you’re fit enough to start.
“I understand it’s a squad game. But without him, I just thought we lacked that little bit upfront. His movement and moving the back four about.”
It was a surprise to see Gakpo come into the starting XI after a largely underwhelming campaign so far.
The Dutchman has arguably been the forward who’s struggled the most at Liverpool this season.
On the other hand, Nunez has managed 11 goals and 11 assists in all competitions.
While he is far from being the finished article, the Uruguayan has made great strides under Klopp’s guidance.
Nevertheless, Nunez starting may not have changed much in the way of the result, with plenty of Liverpool players struggling on the day.
