153 Few would have predicted Viktor Gyokeres going to Sporting Lisbon and being quite as good as he has been so far for them.
Sporting signed Gyokeres from Coventry City in the summer and the Swede has taken to life in Europe with ease. He has smashed in 17 goals and laid on nine assists already in a Sporting shirt.
His form has seen Premier League clubs come calling as well. Both Arsenal and Chelsea are thought to be keen on signing him, albeit Gyokeres does have a whopping £86m release-clause in his contract.
Liverpool told Gyokeres is better than all their forwards
Of course, other clubs are bound to be keen as well. And while there’s been no mention of Liverpool, a Sporting legend has suggested Gyokeres would improve them.
Speaking to A-Bola, Sporting legend Manuel Fernandes has claimed that Gyokeres has more quality than any of the current forwards at Liverpool.
“I sincerely hope he doesn’t leave Sporting, at least before the end of the season. I think it’s difficult for any club to beat the [€100 million] clause in this winter market. To leave you have to be to a big club in England. For example, Liverpool have players there who don’t have half the quality of Gyokeres. I see him, for example, at the level of a Bayern Munich. But for now, so be it. It’s clear that he feels good at Sporting, he’s a very serious and focused player,” Fernandes said.
Big claims
While Manuel Fernandes is a knowledgeable football man, we’d have to disagree with his claim here.
Yes, Gyokeres might have certain qualities that Liverpool don’t have in their squad. But to suggest they don’t have half the quality he has, is quite absurd.
Mo Salah, Darwin Nunez and Diogo Jota are all at the level and better. Indeed, Nunez is a prime example for Gyokeres to follow, given the Uruguayan hammered the Portuguese league before finding the PL much tougher.
So, this is a bold old claim. But right now, it’s one that’s got little evidence to back it up.
