The Hungarian international has arrived aware of the big shoes he has to fill
Dominik Szoboszlai arrived in Merseyside this summer from RB Leipzig hoping to help Liverpool return to the pinnacle of domestic and European football once again after a slog of a 2022/23 season.
The Hungarian captain recently spoke to Football Focus about his first few months at Liverpool — and on his time in the famous No. 8 shirt:
“It’s crazy. When I came, [in] the first days I was like, ‘Am I on PlayStation or something?!’ It was great to know [the players] and how they are, not only from the television. To play with them is even better.”
“I don’t want to be [Steven Gerrard], I want to be myself. But of course if they put a paper in front of me now and say you’re going to have the same impact or the same career here in Liverpool, I’m going to sign it directly!”
Though Szoboszlai is enjoying his success at Liverpool thus far, his decision to come to England was not as straighforward as one might think:
“To be honest, I was thinking, ‘Is it the right timing?’ This was the only thing I was thinking of. Not [if it was] the right choice, the right timing. Am I ready to come to the Premier League and play for Liverpool? And I said to myself, ‘Always when something big comes you never know you are ready, [so] you have to try.’
“And if I don’t try, it will always be in my mind why I didn’t go. So I just said, ‘Let’s do it, let’s see, I’m going to be ready.’”
Szoboszlai has become a fan favorite already this season; Reds fans will look forward to what he can accomplish as he continues to settle in at the club.
