'Discredited': Tim Sherwood says he seriously underestimated how good £75m Liverpool player actually was

Virgil van Dijk has to be considered one of the best signings in Liverpool’s history.

Even at £75m, the Dutch defender has proven to be a bargain for the Reds, but they could’ve landed him for so much cheaper a few years earlier.

Indeed, before Van Dijk was a star at Liverpool, he made his name at Southampton, and he cost the Saints just £12m.

In hindsight, the top clubs must be kicking themselves for not signing Van Dijk when they had that chance, and speaking on the No Tippy Tappy Football Podcast, Tim Sherwood has shared how he vastly underrated Van Dijk when he moved to St Mary’s.

Sherwood says that he had a good look at the defender but he discredited his ability due to the fact he was playing in the Scottish League and everything looked so easy for him.

Sherwood underrated Van Dijk

The former Tottenham and Aston Villa manager shared how he’d underrated the Liverpool star.

“Credit to Southampton, they were the team, we all looked, and we all discredited the Scottish league. Because he was strolling it, he was a centre-back who was never heading the ball, he just played and found it too easy, they took the plunge and get the big bucks off Liverpool, so credit to Southampton.”

Still happening

Van Dijk isn’t the only person in football who has been underrated due to the fact they’re operating in Scotland.

Indeed, this is still happening to this day. Ange Postecoglou arrived at Tottenham this summer from Celtic, and he was almost immediately written off due to his background.

However, much like Van Dijk, Postecoglou quickly silenced his doubters.

It’s easy to take aim at the Scottish League due to the perceived poor standard, but there are some gems to be found north of the border every now and then.
