Evans previously played for Matt Beard at Bristol City.
Liverpool Women announced another signing on Friday, this time bringing a defender into the squad. This marks the third for the Women’s squad, following Olivia Smith and most recently, striker Cornelia Kopacs earlier this week.
28 year old Gemma Evans joins Liverpool after a season at Manchester United, and a career that had her at Reading and Bristol City respectively, spending time under Liverpool manager Matt Beard at Bristol. She made 19 appearances for United last season, including at Wembley for their FA Cup victory.
Evans is an experienced centerback with the skills to also play left back, and over 100 appearances in the Women’s Super League, in addition to over 50 appearances for the Welsh national team alongside new teammate Ceri Holland.
“It’s a massive move for me,” Evans told the club website.
“Last season was a difficult year for me as I had to learn to be a teammate in a different way on the field.
“So it’s so exciting to be at Liverpool and working with Matt again, and I’m proper looking forward to getting ready to go.”
Evans has already joined the squad at Melwood, including reuniting with former Bristol teammates Yana Daniels and Jas Matthews.
“They are a really nice bunch I’ve met so far and we are really looking forward to try to build on last year and hopefully I can help as much as possible,” Evans added.
“I want more game time and I want to prove the ability I think I have. I haven’t been able to showcase that the last season so I want to meet my standards again and hit the floor running.”
Naturally, Matt Beard also spoke effusively of Evans’ joining the squad and the opportunity to work with the defender again.
“I’m delighted to bring Gemma in,” said Beard.
“She is a talented player, has got great experience playing in the WSL and international football with Wales, so with her personality as well coming in I think it’s a great fit for us.
“Gemma is versatile and can also play left-back. Last season we lost Taylor [Hinds] for a few months and Jas also had a difficult end to the season with injuries and we looked at it and felt it was something we needed to address.”
