David Ornstein has now said that one club might actually be forced to sell a key man this summer – amid interest from Liverpool.
The Athletic’s Football Correspondent – arguably the most reliable journalist around – answered questions from fans in a Q&A session earlier on Thursday, where he made the interesting comments.
Liverpool are expected to be busy this summer, as Michael Edwards attempts to freshen up the squad and ensure the Reds remain competitive once Jurgen Klopp departs.
So, who is the Liverpool target Ornstein thinks could be sold? Let’s take a look…
David Ornstein thinks Liverpool target could be sold
Well – according to AS in Spain – Liverpool are expected to make a bid for Newcastle No.39 Bruno Guimaraes this summer.
The Brazilian has been a huge success in the Premier League since making a £40m move to Tyneside from Lyon back in January 2022 – helping the Magpies qualify for the UEFA Champions League while also reaching a Carabao Cup final.
However, as the Premier League begin to dish out punishments for those in breach of profit and sustainability rules, Newcastle need to make a major sale this summer, with Ornstein under the impression that the South American could be sold instead of another valuable asset such as Alexander Isak.

There aren’t really any homegrown players I imagine they are willing to part with who would generate the required finances to make it worthwhile. Those who would do that are the likes of Isak and Bruno.
“I would be shocked if Isak was sold… Bruno is an interesting one, though, because I’m aware of clubs who have a concrete interest in him. His style and ability to operate as a No.6 and No.8 is what a number of top sides are seeking. Is he as vital and irreplaceable to Newcastle as Isak? I’m not saying a move is sure to happen but equally it wouldn’t surprise me.”
The Liverpool target has made 42 appearances in all competitions for Newcastle so far this season, scoring three goals while also providing seven assists.
Bruno Guimaraes could replace Thiago
Liverpool underwent a midfield overhaul last summer with the additions of Alexis Mac Allister, Wataru Endo, Dominik Szoboszlai and Ryan Gravenberch, so you might be asking why Edwards would sign another option in that department.
Incidentally, Thiago sees his contract expire this summer.

If that is the case, perhaps Bruno could arrive at Anfield as the heir to Thiago’s throne – only time will tell.
