'Dark horse': 37-year-old manager tipped as having outside chance to get the Liverpool job

Liverpool’s search for Jurgen Klopp’s successor has been blown wide open following recent news about Xabi Alonso.

The Bayer Leverkusen boss was widely viewed as the favourite to take over from Jurgen Klopp following an exceptional spell in Germany. But just last week, Alonso confirmed he will remain at Leverkusen beyond the summer

It’s led to Sporting CP boss Ruben Amorim emerging as the new favourite to land the Liverpool job.

Yet, nothing is decided at this stage and a new name has been thrown into the mix by Peterborough United chairman Darragh MacAnthony

McKenna tipped as ‘dark horse’ to land Liverpool job

Speaking on talkSPORT, host Jim White quizzed MacAnthony on whether Ipswich town boss Kieran McKenna is set to become a Premier League manager.

“Yeah, I was being laughed out of the studio by [producer] Luke – a Liverpool fan – this morning, as an outside dark horse (to succeed Klopp),” the Posh chairman said.

“I love his brand of football. I’ve been watching him since last year in League One and what he’s done.

“You can say that Ipswich are a big club, but they didn’t go out and spend mega-millions in the summer.

“They kept a large part of the squad and the team from League One and they’re top of the Championship with five or six games to go, it’s incredible really.

“It’s not just his coaching and managing, it’s his style as well. It’s great to watch.

“If you watched that game yesterday, it was a great advert for the industry. It was just non-stop. Russell [Martin] does a great job with Southampton and his style.

“Then you’ve got Ipswich with their style and it was just an enthralling game to watch and that’s what you want to see. I think he’s destined for the top.

“I think he wins promotion with Ipswich this year and he’ll surprise people with what he’ll do with them in the Premier League and within five or six years, he’ll be managing a top six club.

“That’s with due respect to Ipswich. I respect everything they’ve done there, but I don’t think you can keep a guy like that down forever.”

McKenna linked with Man United

After an exceptional season at Ipswich so far, McKenna has also been linked with a move to Old Trafford in recent days.

The 37-year-old currently has Ipswich sitting top of the Championship after 40 games played.

It’s quite the story for the East Anglian side after McKenna took over back in December 2021 while the club were in League One.

It would appear that McKenna has quite a decent chance of becoming a Premier League boss next season but whether or not that’s with Ipswich remains to be seen.

As for Liverpool, it would be a surprise to see the club move for a manager like McKenna.

While he is excelling at Ipswich, it would feel like a huge step up for a manager who has yet to manage in the Premier League.
