'Dare I say it': Club legend now compares Liverpool forward to Thierry Henry

It’s certainly not every day that a Liverpool forward gets compared to Thierry Henry, the accolade carries quite a lot of weight.

Jurgen Klopp has some excellent strikers in his Liverpool side, he’s got plenty of players who can win a game of football.

But in the prelude to Mohamed Salah heading to AFCON, many fans and pundits were worried the absence would derail Liverpool’s title hopes.

The side still had the likes of Luis Diaz, Darwin Nunez, Diogo Jota and Cody Gakpo, but the Egyptian was the star.

The names above have all come and gone from Klopp’s starting XI in the past year or so, but Salah always remained.

That being said, Liverpool’s squad has coped admirably during AFCON, winning all of the games Salah has missed.

And when speaking on talkSPORT today, Liverpool legend Phil Thompson saw similarities between one forward and Thierry Henry.

Darwin Nunez was at the double against Bournemouth on Sunday, and Thompson absolutely loved his performance.

Discussing his goals and endeavour, Thompson said there was a reason Liverpool fans love the Uruguayan, even when he’s not scoring.

Speaking to Ally McCoist, Thompson said: “The great thing about Darwin, which is what fans love in players, he never gives up, he always has a go.

“Yeah he’s got his failings but the Liverpool fans absolutely, for what he gives, and he doesn’t stop trying.

“I know where you are coming from Ally, he’s just got to be a little bit cuter with his finishing but didn’t we see that in the Bournemouth game.

“The great move, he comes, a little bit, dare I say, Thierry Henry like, and he just glides it past him into the far corner.

“And the second one that he scores is even better. Cross from Joe Gomez, reaching out for it, just delicately with the outside of his right foot on the stretch, and puts it into the corner.”

Of course, Nunez still has a long way to go before he can claim Henry’s level of notoriety.

But winning a Premier League medal with Liverpool this season would certainly be a start.

And although some Liverpool fans may feel Thomspon is getting a little carried away comparing the forward to Henry, there is merit to his words.

Scoring or not, Nunez looks to have turned a corner in the last few months.

And quite pertinently, Trent Alexander-Arnold has now been discussing Thierry Henry himself
