Gareth Southgate’s future as England manager is up in the air, with the Three Lions boss set to take England to Euro 2024 – and Danny Murphy responded when asked if he would take him at Liverpool.

Jurgen Klopp has obviously announced that he will be stepping down as Liverpool manager at the end of the season and both Michael Edwards and Richard Hughes will be tasked with finding a replacement.

At the top of the list remains Xabi Alonso, a former Anfield star that is currently impressing in Germany as Bayer Leverkusen boss. Bayer sit top of the Bundesliga, ahead of Harry Kane’s Bayern Munich.

Sporting Lisbon boss Ruben Amorim, Brighton’s Roberto De Zerbi and even Lens gaffer Franck Haise are linked. Southgate, meanwhile, is being linked with replacing Erik ten Hag at Manchester United.

Danny Murphy says Xabi Alonso is better than Gareth Southgate

Ten Hag’s future as Manchester United manager is obviously in doubt, with United struggling and the pressure high on the former Ajax man. Southgate is said to be under consideration by Man United.

It is unclear if Manchester United will look to make a change, but the new hierarchy have been vocal and it their aims and targets are not met come the end of the season, then a change may be on the horizon.

Speaking on TalkSPORT on Tuesday morning [20/03, 11.10AM], former Liverpool midfielder Murphy was discussing Southgate’s links with United, before being asked if he would take him over at Liverpool.

“It depends on what the other options were. I think Liverpool have got better options than Manchester United, like Alonso. Yeah, he’s a better option for Liverpool than Southgate,” Murphy said on TalkSPORT.

What Jordan Henderson has said about Southgate in the past

Southgate has obviously impressed as England manager, but he is not everyone’s cup of tea. Certainly, Liverpool fans are not particularly big fans of him – due to his treatment of Trent Alexander-Arnold.

Jordan Henderson though is a big fan, maybe because Southgate keeps picking him. He once praised the England boss for implementing his identity: “The biggest thing the gaffer has brought is identity.”

His pragmatic approach, though, would hardly fit in at Anfield. Southgate likes to play with two holding midfielders – a system that did get him to the final of Euro 2020, with Kalvin Phillips and Declan Rice.

Liverpool and Jurgen Klopp specifically are renowned for rock and roll football, more focus on attack. Murphy is right, Liverpool have better options available in Alonso – or at least, a better fit in Alonso.
