‘Could hardly move’: Ray Houghton says one Liverpool player was absolutely exhausted yesterday

There were plenty of tired legs on the pitch for Liverpool yesterday as they secured a memorable League Cup final win over Chelsea.

Both Liverpool and Chelsea had their fair share of chances on the day but were unable to find a breakthrough inside 90 minutes.

Virgil van Dijk had the ball in the back of the net in the second half but it was controversially ruled out for offside.

Of course, the Reds skipper popped up once again and netted the winning goal in extra time after a monumental effort from Jurgen Klopp’s side.

A handful of Liverpool players lasted the full 120 minutes and Harvey Elliott was one of them as he put in an exceptional shift off the right-hand side in Mohamed Salah’s absence.

And he’s received praise from a former Liverpool man in Ray Houghton, who says the youngster was exhausted but had a real ‘spring in his step’ when the ball was at his feet.

Houghton says Elliott was exhausted

Speaking on Liverpool’s official podcast, Houghton reflected on a brilliant day for his former side at Wembley.

“They were all jumping together, they’d all been walking around like stiff-legged,” he said. “But when they were just jumping around there, Harvey was the one.

“When Harvey Elliott didn’t have the ball he could hardly move, when the ball came to him, there was a spring in his step, he was buzzing around, it was great!”

Elliott was unfortunate not to get on the scoresheet on Sunday after going close in the latter stages of the second half.

The 20-year-old has mainly been used as an option from the bench this season but he’s really stepped up in recent weeks.

With a host of key attacking players sidelined, the Englishman is certainly taking his opportunity in Klopp’s side.

He put in a huge shift against Chelsea and looked bright on the ball as he was at the heart of some of Liverpool’s best moments in the game.
