Liverpool were a bit too flat against Atalanta on Thursday evening.
The Reds didn’t play badly against the Italians, don’t get us wrong, but it wasn’t the most convincing of performances and they didn’t play like a team who were fighting for their European lives.
Indeed, Jurgen Klopp’s side were uncharacteristically conservative in Bergamo on Thursday, and there wasn’t much attacking impetus within the side.
Speaking on the Official Liverpool Podcast, Ray Houghton has been discussing Liverpool’s performance, and he highlighted one player who he thought was actually dangerous on the day.

Houghton named Dominik Szoboszlai as the player he thought actually looked sharp going forwards.
“I was saying in the second half because they weren’t getting in behind in the way they were in the first half, they were posing problems. Szoboszlai was the one for me, he made some great runs in behind the backline and he was a constant threat, but he stopped doing it,” Houghton said.
Dominik Szoboszlai looked much better
It’s promising that Szoboszlai put in a performance like this against Atalanta because he’s not been great recently.
Indeed, in the Reds’ last few games the Hungarian hasn’t looked himself for one reason or another.
He’s not been as creative in the attack while he’s lacked the energy that he showed earlier in the season.
However, on Thursday, he seemed to be back to something close to his best, and it was great to see the midfielder playing with such freedom once again.
Unfortunately, his performance against Atalanta wasn’t enough to drag Liverpool into the semi-finals of the Europa League, but if he can carry these sorts of showings through into the Premier League then maybe, just maybe, Liverpool will have enough to get over the line in the title race.
