Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk’s time at the World Cup is set to continue for a little while longer.
The Dutchman captain his side to a 3-1 victory over the United States to reach the quarter-finals in Qatar.
Van Dijk famously missed out on last summer’s European Championship after failing to recover from a serious knee injury.
Although Liverpool haven’t been in the best form this season, and Van Dijk’s performances have been up and down.

Van Dijk has started this tournament well, helping the Dutch keep two clean sheets.
There was nothing anyone could do about Haji Wright’s fluke goal for the USA yesterday.
However, Memphis Depay, Daley Blind and Denzel Dumfries wrapped up the game for Louis van Gaal’s side.
Van Dijk progresses at the World Cup
The Liverpool defender posted on Instagram after the match to celebrate this team’s win.
He posted two pictures with the caption, “Progress. Next up, Quarter finals.”
Liverpool target Cody Gakpo replied, and clearly loved his international teammate’s performance.
The likes of Memphis Depay and Nathan Ake were big fans too, while former Celtic man Jeremie Frimpong simply said, ‘Captain’.

It means Van Dijk will line up against Lionel Messi at the World Cup, in what is possibly the ultimate test.
Van Dijk has only met Messi twice, but it was in arguably Liverpool’s greatest ever comeback.
