The Dutch striker shone bright in the Euros
Though the Dutch side went out against England in the 2024 Euros, Cody Gakpo nonetheless did himself proud over the course of the tournament, and was one harsh own goal decision away from taking home the tournament Golden Boot outright.
Instead, the striker shares the honor with six other players — Harry Kane (England), Georges Mikautadze (Georgia), Jamal Musiala (Germany), Dani Olmo (Spain), and Ivan Schranz (Slovakia).
The scoring tallies for the tournament were relatively low, with three goals the ticket to the top of the scoring table, but Gakpo’s all-round performances were eye-catching throughout. The Dutch striker befuddled defenses and on multiple occasions managed to set up chances after making seemingly impossible moves work: the types of choices on the ball that new Liverpool coach Arne Slot will be itching for.
Gakpo and other internationals are sure to have some time off following their exploits, so Slot will have to wait to see what he has on his hands ahead of the public pre-season in just over 10 days’ time.
