The goalkeeper reflects on the changes ahead and his excitement moving forward.
We’re a week into preseason, and stalwart goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher is preparing to begin his 10th season as a Red. The Republic of Ireland player is getting used to the new head coach, new backroom staff, and new way of doing things. Still, he is happy with how the season has started.
“It’s been really good, really enjoyable. Obviously the first few days were just testing and stuff, then we got into the actual training sessions, which have been really good,” Kelleher said to the official site.
First choice goalkeeper Alisson Becker has yet to return from representing Brazil in the Copa Ámerica this summer, so Kelleher is the first to experience this new regime under goalkeeping coach Fabian Otte.
“Obviously the first few days were just testing and stuff, then we got into the actual training sessions, which have been really good,” he said.
“[Slot] has been excellent so far. A lot of detail to what he wants us to do, there’s a lot of stuff to take onboard but he gets his messages across really well and easy to understand as well, which is helpful. His sessions are intense and he pushes us, which is always good.
“It has been really enjoyable so far, I must say.”
On beginning his 10th season, Kelleher is positive about his time at the club and the impact he’s had at key points in the last several campaigns.
“It’s obviously been such a long time now since I came over when I was 16. Time flies, I’ve enjoyed every minute here, to be fair,” he said.
“I just want to try to keep going and going on that upward trajectory. It’s been really enjoyable and I’m looking to push on.”
Kelleher is one of the few barebones members of the squad who are currently available to begin training. As the days go on, the rest of the players will slowly begin trickling back into the team, and we’ll get a clearer picture of what things might look like under Slot.
