388 Virgil van Dijk has told The Overlap that he can only say good things about Manchester United defender Lisandro Martinez, insisting that concerns over his height should not even be a talking point.
Martinez has come under real scrutiny since arriving in the Premier League in the summer. He was not helped by Erik ten Hag’s men making an awful start to the campaign.

His height – Martinez is 5″9 – has been used to criticise the Argentinian. Plenty of pundits have expressed doubts regarding whether he can cope with the demands of the Premier League.

Martinez has emphatically silenced his doubters. And Gary Neville went on to ask van Dijk about the 24-year-old given that he has arrived from The Netherlands.

Van Dijk has come up against Martinez this season. And he insisted that he has been really impressed by what he has seen from the defender – completely dismissing the idea that his height may work against him.
“Height difference is something that we shouldn’t even mention it. It can help if you’re taller, I think he did fantastic against us. He’s a good signing for United. Very passionate, good on the ball and I can only be positive about him,” he told The Overlap.
“Hopefully he will be doing well for United but not being successful in the other way!”
A lot of pundits have been made to look quite foolish when it comes to Martinez. Many made it abundantly clear that they had barely watched him in action before his move.
He was still one of the better players when United were really struggling initially. And he has continued to thrive now that ten Hag’s men are flying up the table.
Certainly, the plaudits coming from his peers such as van Dijk will mean a lot more to Martinez than the thoughts of those who take one statistic into consideration and write him off because of it.
