156 Liverpool will be looking for a new manager this summer, and the name on everyone’s lips right now is Xabi Alonso.
The Bayer Leverkusen boss has been working wonders over in Germany as of late, and, as you can imagine, his work in the Bundesliga has led to links to the soon-to-be vacant Liverpool post.
Speaking on Premier League Productions, Owen Hargreaves has been discussing what the future looks like for Liverpool and how the Reds can keep going at the top level.
Hargreaves suggested that if Xabi Alonso comes in and signs Florian Wirtz along with a top class defensive midfielder in the summer, the Reds could compete going forwards.

Hargreaves spoke about Alonso’s potential arrival at Liverpool.
“I think the midfield balance is getting better. They will probably get a world-class defensive midfield player. All it needs is someone to come in, if Xabi comes in with Florian Wirtz, who is a brilliant young German player at Leverkusen, and they had a defensive midfield player, I think this Liverpool team could compete,” Hargreaves said.

If Alonso did make Wirtz his first signing at Liverpool that would be a huge statement.
That would show that Alonso isn’t trying to be Jurgen Klopp 2.0, he wants to be his own man.
Wirtz is a ‘special‘ player, but he wouldn’t have a place in this Klopp team as the Reds currently don’t operate with a classic number 10.
However, Alonso would be bringing his own system to Anfield, and Wirtz would be the key player in that system.
Of course, this is all pie in the sky at the moment, but with Alonso potentially headed to Liverpool and Wirtz potentially looking for a move this summer, don’t be shocked if this deal is at least mooted at Anfield.
