Liverpool got their recruitment spot on this summer.
The likes of Dominik Szoboszlai and Alexis Mac Allister have hit the ground running at Anfield, but the Anfield outfit’s flurry of signings almost looked very different.
Indeed, cast your mind back to the summer, and you’ll remember one of the first links that emerged out of Anfield was to Mason Mount.
Liverpool were strongly linked with Mount before he went to Manchester United, and according to James Pearce, speaking on the Walk On Podcast, those links were legitimate.
However, Liverpool were never going to sign Mount for the figures Man United were looking at with Pearce stating that the recruitment team at Anfield valued Mount at around £40m, £20m less than he would eventually move to Old Trafford for later in the window.

Pearce shared what he knows about the ‘phenomenal‘ former Chelsea midfielder.
“The way things turned out with Mount look like a blessing in disguise,” Pearce said.
“Liverpool were very keen on Mount, but after a pursuit that went on for a while, Mount made it known that United was his destination of choice. It wasn’t as simple as that because the numbers involved in the deal, Liverpool wouldn’t have got involved anyway. They valued Mount at around £40m, and United paid £60m and wages on £250k-a-week plus. Those numbers, Liverpool wouldn’t have got to.”
Too much
It’s often said that hindsight is 20/20 in these situations, but this is one we could see coming a mile off.
Mount at £60m always looked like a dodgy deal, especially as he was in the final year of his contract and the likes of James Maddison were moving for less.
In the end, Liverpool paid that fee for Dominik Szoboszlai, and it hasn’t taken long for the Hungarian to prove he was the better value purchase than Mount.
