Gianluca Di Marzio has told Soccer News that he believes that the race for Cody Gakpo will come down to Liverpool or Manchester United, with Premier League teams the only clubs who can afford the Dutchman.
Gakpo’s World Cup exploits have only made a move away from PSV Eindhoven in the January transfer window more likely.

Liverpool or Manchester United for Gakpo
And he continued to impress in Qatar. Gakpo scored in each of the Netherlands’ group-stage games to help them reach the quarter-finals. Of course, they came within a penalty shootout of reaching the last four.

In fact, Di Marzio believes that the battle for his signature could come down to two sides.
“At Manchester United or Liverpool. He fits perfectly with Klopp’s playing style at Liverpool. But perhaps even better at Manchester United, now that they no longer have access to Cristiano Ronaldo. There is room for a player like him and for Gakpo now is the right time to move to the Premier League,” he told Soccer News.
“Only Premier League clubs can afford him, because PSV asks a lot of money for him. So I think it will be a battle between Manchester United and Liverpool. Maybe in January, but I don’t think so. I expect that we will be dealing with a ‘different’ market in January. It will probably be the summer, but it is quite possible that Manchester United are already starting negotiations, because they have to replace Ronaldo.”
Liverpool are in the process of updating the squad which brought them so much success over the years. They now have a number of impressive young players within the squad who Jurgen Klopp already has a lot of faith in.
The forward line will need refreshing at some stage. Both Roberto Firmino and Mohamed Salah are into their thirties. And Luis Diaz is now facing a spell on the sidelines.
Gakpo would be an outstanding signing if Liverpool could win the race for his signature. He is a ‘special‘ talent with an incredibly high ceiling.
And given the quality the Reds already have, he could be a perfect addition.
