'Baffling': BBC pundit shocked by what Liverpool did last summer after signing Alexis Mac Allister

BBC pundit Garth Crooks says he’s still baffled that Liverpool tried to sign Moises Caicedo last summer after bringing in Alexis Mac Allister.

The Reds have exceeded expectations this season. They are on top of the Premier League table right now, five points ahead of Arsenal and Manchester City. Mac Allister is proving to be a fine signing.

Liverpool attempting to sign Moises Caicedo after Alexis Mac Allister was ‘baffling’

Liverpool had a very eventful summer transfer window, didn’t they?

They wrapped up a deal to sign Alexis Mac Allister very quickly in the summer, before turning their focus to his old Brighton teammate Moises Caicedo.

Jurgen Klopp decided Caicedo was the player he wanted, so Liverpool made a record-breaking £111 million bid to sign the Ecuador international. Brighton accepted that offer, but Caicedo rejected Liverpool and decided to join Chelsea instead.

BBC pundit Garth Crooks has been in awe of Mac Allister recently, and he has branded Liverpool’s attempt to sign Caicedo after bringing in the Argentine as ‘baffling’.

He wrote on BBC Sport: “Mac Allister was absolutely superb in midfield. He never complicated matters, and played the most exquisite passes at the right time.

“Since the departures of Georginio Wijnaldum, Fabinho and Jordan Henderson, Liverpool have struggled to fill the defensive midfield role. I never thought Thiago worked there, as even when he played well, he slowed the tempo of the team to almost walking pace.

“Mac Allister is a different animal entirely. He moves the ball on, retaining the pace of Liverpool’s play, and the quality of his passing is excellent. He’s an exceptional player bought at an exceptional price.

“Why Liverpool were prepared to pay around £111 million for Moises Caicedo when Mac Alister only cost half that figure is baffling. In terms of value for money, there is no comparison between the two players.”

Mac Allister has been amazing for Liverpool

Alexis Mac Allister was always viewed as a fantastic signing for Liverpool – almost everyone expected him to be a big hit at Anfield.

The Argentine has mostly been used as a number six this season. That is not his natural position, but he has still been fantastic there.

Moises Caicedo, on the other hand, hasn’t had a great season at all at Chelsea. He had a very difficult start to the campaign, and although he has looked better recently, we’ve seen nothing that justifies his mammoth price tag.

Liverpool fans were disappointed when they missed out on Caicedo in the summer, but they’ll all be glad now that they didn’t get him.
