Bayer Leverkusen are reportedly confident that Xabi Alonso will remain with the Bundesliga club this summer after strong links to Liverpool.
The Spanish manager has been the early firm favourite to take over at Anfield this summer after news broke on Friday that Jurgen Klopp will be leaving Liverpool at the end of the season.
With Alonso a modern-day Liverpool legend and working wonders with Leverkusen, it makes sense why the former Real Madrid midfielder would be a front-runner to replace Klopp on Merseyside.
However, according to Sky Germanyâs Florian Plettenberg, Leverkusen remain optimistic that Alonso wonât be leaving this summer and the German club arenât worried yet at this stage about Liverpool.
Alonso has led Leverkusen to the top of the Bundesliga standings, with the 42-year-old coach giving Bayern Munich their biggest trouble yet in the German title race.
Yet Leverkusenâs confidence in Alonso remaining with the club is an interesting stance to take, especially given how tempting a job like Liverpool would be for the former Anfield maestro.

However, when a club as big as Liverpool comes knocking, it will be hard for any manager on the planet to turn down such a job, with Alonso arguably even more tempted by the role given his Anfield roots.
As a result, Leverkusen could face Liverpoolâs full strength in the coming weeks as the Reds accelerate their plans to find a replacement for Klopp ahead of the summer.
And for many fans and pundits, Alonso is the name that could be expected to take over at Liverpool, with the Basque coach one of the most exciting young managers in European football.
