‘At the moment’: BBC pundit says player Liverpool released is actually better than Darwin Nunez

Darwin Nunez is transforming as a player.

He’s not scoring many goals at the moment, but he is contributing massively to this Liverpool team as a constant threat leading the line.

He grabbed a vital assist against Fulham on Wednesday evening, and speaking on the BBC Radio Five Live Football Daily Podcast, Dion Dublin has been discussing Nunez’s evolution.

During the podcast there were comparisons between Nunez and Roberto Firmino as the Uruguayan grows to become more of an auxiliary forward, and Dublin actually said that he thinks Nunez isn’t in Firmino’s league at the moment.

Nunez not in Firmino’s league

Dublin shared his verdict on the two players.

“Yeah, I think the question is, he’s not quite in Bobby’s league at the moment, he’s working towards that, but is that enough for him? Is it enough as a number nine to just contribute with your pace, your power, your endeavour and your assists, I think he wants to get goals, he wants to find himself in goalscoring positions all the time, he just needs to find a purple patch and he will be in the goals all the time,” Dublin said.

Not there

Dublin says that Nunez isn’t in Firmino’s league and he’s absolutely right.

Not only was the Brazilian a more technical and creative player for Liverpool, he was more effective in front of goal as well.

It may be hard to believe, but Firmino actually scored more league goals than Nunez last season despite his limited gametime.

There is a gulf in class between these two, Firmino has all the finesse, poise and composure in the world, while Nunez is a bit of a bull in a china shop who can be incredibly effective in his own unique way.

Nunez isn’t at Firmino’s level just yet, but that isn’t to say he never will be.
