The Dutch manager of Feyenoord has come out as the frontrunner for Jürgen Klopp’s job.
This particular news cycle is moving pretty quickly. Feyenoord manager Arne Slot himself has confirmed the talks between Feyenoord and Liverpool with the latter looking to hire Slot as manager following Jürgen Klopp’s departure this summer.
Speaking ahead of Feyenoord’s match up with Go Ahead Eagles in the Eredivisie, the Dutchman made clear that yes, things are happening, and yes, he’s excited about it.
“It’s no secret that I want to go to Liverpool,” said Slot. “The clubs are negotiating. We have to wait until an agreement is reached, but I have every confidence in that. I’d like to become the new Liverpool manager.
“The clubs are negotiating, so I am still on hold. We are waiting for an agreement to be reached, but I am confident of that.”
Feyenoord reportedly rejected Liverpool’s opening offer for the 45 year old, and will still be conducting a thorough search should this candidate fall through. If all goes well, and terms are agreed, we could be seeing the announcement this weekend.
Slot already has the approval of Liverpool captain and fellow Dutchman, Virgil Van Dijk.
“I find it hard to answer of course, but I think Arne Slot is perhaps one of the better Dutch coaches at this moment,” Van Dijk said following the derby on Wednesday.
“I think the way of playing and the philosophy he has, that he could be a Liverpool coach.”
