Scotland captain Robertson was always going to be selection but Doak’s inclusion came as a surprise to many.

After Tuesday’s news of four Liverpool inclusions on the provisional 33-man Euro 2024 roster for England, including the surprise inclusions of Jarell Quansah, Curtis Jones, and Joe Gomez along with Trent Alexander-Arnold, today there’s more surprises north of the border.

A day after England’s announcement, Scotland have unveiled their provisional Euros squad and in addition to the quite entirely expected inclusions of national team captain Andy Robertson, there’s room in the pre-selection selection for 18-year-old winger Ben Doak.

The surprise comes mainly from the fact that Doak has had zero previous senior caps for Scotland. He was also sidelined for much of the past season with a meniscus tear that limited him to just five senior Liverpool appearances and just 247 total minutes played.

Still, Doak is rightly regarded as one of Liverpool’s truly stand-out young talents, and for a Scotland side arguably most lacking in attack one can start to rationalize his inclusion in the provisional squad—the real surprise, perhaps, would be in next making the final squad.
