'Amazing': Don Hutchison says two Liverpool players haven't had enough credit in the build up to Man City

Liverpool take on Manchester City today in one of the biggest Premier League games for some time at Anfield.

Jurgen Klopp will host Pep Guardiola in the league for the final time at Liverpool’s home and the stakes couldn’t be higher. With Arsenal winning against Brentford, the battle is now back on to go top of the pile and both teams will be desperate for the win.

For Liverpool, there are some big decisions to be made in terms of team selection. Caoimhin Kelleher is expected to start again and with Mo Salah getting back on in midweek, Klopp could well throw the Egyptian back in from the off.

However, speaking to the BBC’s Friday Social pod, former Red Don Hutchison reserved special praise for two of Liverpool’s back up players in Kelleher, and midfielder Harvey Elliott.

Klopp’s squad players stepping up

Speaking about the City game and the potential starting XI, Hutchison wanted to point out how important Liverpool’s squad players had been.

“I don’t think there’s much in it to be fair. The last half a dozen games I’ve seen Liverpool play, they don’t look particularly solid. They’ve always given up chances. Kelleher is in great form by the way. Everyone talks about Alisson being a world class goalkeeper and the best but Kelleher has done some job. Even people like Harvey Elliott, I think he’s been amazing while Mo Salah has been out,” Hutchinson said.

Elliott and Kelleher are key for Liverpool v Manchester City

Winning a title or any trophy is about having a squad not just an XI and both Harvey Elliott and Caoimhin Kelleher have really done the business.

Every team needs players who can step in from the cold and produce and both of these two have done that.

Of course, Kelleher is the man under the microscope more with Alisson out. But he has never ever failed Liverpool and the Anfield crowd will be more than confident in their man.

And if the pair can help the Reds to a huge win over City today, then their status as key figures in this squad cannot be questioned.
