Xabi Alonso is making plenty of headlines right now.
The Spaniard is being discussed as Jurgen Klopp’s potential successor at Liverpool, and it’s not hard to understand why.
The Bayer Leverkusen boss is doing incredible things in Germany at the moment, and as a former Liverpool player, these links were bound to come up.
Alonso himself said a few years ago that he dreams of managing the Reds one day, but, interestingly, he’s also previously had his say on who he thinks should get this job.
Indeed, back in 2017, Alonso stated that Steven Gerrard has all the attributes necessary to manage Liverpool.

Alonso spoke about his former teammate back in 2017.
“I’m following the early steps of his career closely and for sure he has all the attributes to become a big manager and a Liverpool manager one day,” Alonso said of Gerrard.
“You can be a great player but being a manager is a different task. For sure, he’s really focused and if he’s able to deliver that message he will be a good one.”
Bad timing
If Jurgen Klopp had left Liverpool a couple of years ago, Gerrard would’ve been a shoo-in for this job.
However, right now, the Liverpool legend’s managerial stock is at an all-time low. Just 18 months ago he was sacked by Aston Villa, and Unai Emery’s incredible start to life at Villa Park has made him look even worse, while he’s currently struggling in the Saudi Pro League, which, with all due respect, isn’t a great look.
For the longest time, it did look as though Gerrard was a Liverpool manager in the making – Alonso himself certainly thought so, but now that the job is about to come up, you’d have to imagine that Gerrard will be some way down the list of names the Reds are considering.
