The search for a new manager at Liverpool is well underway and the decision is wide open after Xabi Alonso said he will remain at Bayer Leverkusen – and plenty of names have been linked with Anfield.

Alonso sits top of the Bundesliga with Leverkusen, well ahead of Bayern as Harry Kane looks set to miss out on another title. Jurgen Klopp will require replacing and Julian Nagelsmann is one name being linked.

Another is Sporting Lisbon star Ruben Amorim, as is Brighton gaffer Roberto De Zerbi. The latter watched his Brighton side struggle to a point away at Brentford on Wednesday night, remaining in ninth place.

Alan Shearer on Roberto De Zerbi’s future amid Liverpool links

Reports say that former Sasuolo gaffer De Zerbi is top of Liverpool’s radar ahead of the summer, when CEO Michael Edwards and sporting director Richard Hughes will need make a decision on a new leader.

With Brighton seemindly having hit a ceiling, qualifying for Europe but unable to go much further as they continue to use a model that sees them sell their best players before reinvesting – De Zerbi could depart.

Asked about De Zerbi’s future on Match of the Day on Wednesday night, Alan Shearer responded by predicting some “trouble” regarding the Italian’s future at Brighton – amid links with the Liverpool role.

“I don’t know [if De Zerbi will stay at Brighton]. I look at his body language. I listen to the words he says and is coming out with – I sense a bit of trouble there,” Shearer said, about the Brighton man’s future.

De Zerbi’s style would suit Liverpool, and one player in particular

That rock-and-roll style of football is something Liverpool fans have come to expect under the years of Klopp and any major deviation from that is only going to act as a brus to tarnish a new manager, with.

So, hiring a manager that plays attractive, attacking football is key and De Zerbi does that. His central style of play, drawing in players in midfield and popping it into spaces behind them works very well.

One player in particular would thrive, if De Zerbi is hired – and it is not as if he is not already impressing. He got the best out of Alexis Mac Allister at Brighton, recently praising him after the 2-1 Anfield loss.
