Liverpool goalkeeper Adrian has branded Joe Gomez as the ‘English Roberto Carlos’ following his performance against Newcastle United last night.
The Reds picked up a fantastic win over the Magpies to move five points clear of their main title rivals, Arsenal and Manchester City, in the Premier League table. Gomez played very well at left-back.
Adrian says Liverpool’s Joe Gomez is the ‘English Roberto Carlos’
Liverpool signed Joe Gomez from Charlton all the way back in 2015 for £3.5 million (Guardian).
The Englishman has experienced everything at Anfield over the years. From playing a big part in helping Liverpool win their first league title in 30 years to suffering injuries and being on the verge of leaving the club – he has been through a lot.
Gomez started this season as a backup too, but injury issues have forced Jurgen Klopp to use the Englishman in almost every single game.
The 26-year-old has played as a left-back in Liverpool’s last three games, including the one against Newcastle United last night, and he has been really good.
Earlier today, Gomez took to Instagram to celebrate last night’s win, and Adrian, who is still at Liverpool, decided to compare him to Brazil great Roberto Carlos.
Replying to Gomez’s post, Adrian wrote: “My English Roberto Carlos”
Luis Diaz, Ibrahima Konate and Diogo Jota also showed Gomez some love.

When you think about Liverpool’s defenders, Joe Gomez is probably the fifth player that comes to your mind, if not sixth or seventh.
The 26-year-old, who has been linked with a move to Tottenham, is clearly not the first-choice at Anfield, but he offers Jurgen Klopp something that none of his other defenders do – versatility.
Gomez can play anywhere across the back four with considerable ease. Left-back is probably the most difficult position of them all for him, but he has been excellent since Kostas Tsimikas‘ injury.
The Englishman will drop out of the side again once Andy Robertson returns in the coming weeks, but people shouldn’t forget how good he has been. He deserves a lot of praise for his performances over the last few weeks.
