After an impressive showing in the pre-season, the young midfielder got back to showing his elite level by scoring for the U21s.

Liverpool’s ability to graduate players from the Academy over the last decade has been one of the major reasons that the club is in such a strong position. A run that include Trent Alexander-Arnold, Caoimhin Kelleher, Curtis Jones, Stefan Bajcetic, Jarell Quansah, and Connor Bradley is quite the record. And with other academy grads like Conor Coady who have gone on to decent footballing careers, it’s clear that the accolades are well-earned. Given the spell that the Young Reds had last season filling-in during a cup run it’s understandable that optimism related to the Academy is sky high.

For folks that might be looking for potential names to finally make their breakthrough this season, one name likely shone the most during preseason: Trey Nyoni. The young midfielder joined the club from Leicester’s Academy ahead of the 2023-2024 season and immediately impressed, debuting for the U21s early in the season and, eventually, for the first team in the League Cup at just 16 years old, becoming the record holder for youngest ever to appear on behalf of Liverpool FC in that historic competition. Now, after a preseason that saw him draw attention for his positive play and contributions, he’s certainly a good bet to be the next one to make the big step into the fringes of the first team.

Until then, he’s still got responsibilities to the U21s and today saw him locked in a contest against his former team, Leciester City, in the Premier League 2. The Reds, unfortunately, weren’t able to take down the Foxes, but Nyoni did provide the sole Liverpool goal.

It’s a crowded field in front of Nyoni at the moment, but it’s also a long campaign. And given that, as of this writing, Liverpool have not yet made a signing - let along taken look at signing at least one more midfielder - one does have to think that Nyoni making first team matchday squads is feeling more like an inevitability. Here’s hoping he can keep progressing in skill such that when he does get the call, he’s able to deliver on all of the promise we’ve seen so far.
