We’re heading towards the business end of the Premier League campaign, and that means it’s almost awards season.
Indeed, it’s almost time to hand out the individual awards for the Golden Boot, the Golden Glove, the Playmaker Award, and most crucially, Player of the Year.
The Player of the Year race this season feels tighter than ever as so many star players have performed brilliantly.
Rodri, Bukayo Saka, Virgil van Dijk and Mohamed Salah are all viable contenders, but speaking to Squawka, Glen Johnson has named another candidate for this award.

Johnson, interestingly, named Darwin Nunez as his Player of the Year.
“It’s a tough one because I think a lot of players have been doing really well. I’d probably go with a surprise, someone like Darwin Nunez,” Johnson said.
“People were saying that he doesn’t score enough goals, but when you think about the way that he plays, he’s probably the last person that you want to play against in the Premier League and that’s saying something with the other players that are available, but yeah I’d probably go with someone like Nunez because he’d probably be the first striker, other than Haaland, that I’d want in my team.”
Darwin Nunez Player of the Year?
Johnson is a good judge of a player, but to name Nunez as Player of the Year is quite outlandish to say the least.
The Uruguayan has been inconsistent most of the time this season, and it’s hard to argue that he’s been Liverpool’s best player, let alone the best player in the Premier League.
We like Nunez a lot as a player, but he’s far from the finished product, and we can’t agree with the view that he’s worthy of the Player of the Year award.
In our view, both Salah and Van Dijk would be stronger candidates at Liverpool as would Alexis Mac Allister.
