As if we were back in 2009, Xabi Alonso is the name on many Liverpool fans’ lips at the moment.
The Spaniard is being linked with a return to Anfield in a managerial capacity after Jurgen Klopp’s bombshell announcement that he will leave at the end of the season.
Alonso is currently at Bayer Leverkusen, and while he’s working wonders in the Bundesliga, it does feel as though his next step will be to one of world football’s elite clubs.
Speaking on his YouTube channel, Guillem Ballague has shared some insight into Alonso’s next steps, claiming that he has had the idea of joining either Real Madrid, Bayern Munich or Liverpool after he’s finished with Leverkusen.
However, Ballague also says that Alonso could also be a contender for the Manchester City job should Pep Guardiola decide to call it a day at the Etihad.

Ballague spoke about the Liverpool-linked manager.
“When he moved to Leverkusen he had an idea which was if it goes well here in Germany, then Bayern Munich, Real Madrid or Liverpool and I will add Manchester City, it could be a possibility, if it went badly he could go to Real Sociedad,” Ballague said.
Beat them to the punch
Alonso has four very good options there, but Liverpool may be able to beat the rest of these teams to the punch.
As things stand, the Reds are the only team looking for a new manager, and that puts them in the driving seat.
Madrid, Bayern and City are all rivals in this case, but, as things stand, they’re not fishing in the same waters as each of those clubs currently have elite managers employed with no indication that there’s going to be a change in the dugout anytime soon.
City may be eyeing Alonso up, but Liverpool may well be front of the queue due to the timing of Klopp’s departure.
