'A player unlike any other': Nation's media hails £180k-a-week Liverpool star's display for his country last night

Liverpool star Trent Alexander-Arnold was in action for England on Friday night.

The Reds ace played the full 90 minutes as the Three Lions laboured to a 2-0 win over Malta in Euro 2024 qualifying.

Alexander-Arnold was given the number 10 shirt and a chance to stake a claim in midfield, in comparison to his usual right-back role for Liverpool.

The Anfield ace delivered a solid display in the middle of the park, operating as a deep-lying playmaker and spraying passes around.

‘Hollywood passes’

Alexander-Arnold received mixed reviews from media outlets for his efforts on the night.

The Evening Standard gave the £180,000-a-week (Spotrac) ace a 7 out of 10 and deemed him unique in the England setup.

“Saw as much of the ball as any England player,” they wrote.

“While not everything came off for the Liverpool man, he was lively throughout and most of his long, raking passes were typically precise.

“A player unlike any other England have.”

Meanwhile, 90Min went with a 6 out of 10 for Alexander-Arnold’s display in the middle of the park.

“Threaded some lovely Hollywood passes into the final third on occasion, but not enough to really justify his selection in midfield again,” they wrote.

Likewise, The Telegraph gave the Liverpool man a score of 6 out of 10.

“Wore No. 10 and plenty of England’s play went through him,” they wrote.

“Survived heavy challenge from Kemar Reid early on. Got a shot away in the second half after a clash of heads with Rashford.”

Alexander-Arnold does well in England midfield audition

Alexander-Arnold can do it all, it seems. Already one of the best right-backs in the world, the Liverpool man is also capable of stepping up in midfield.

Southgate handed him the keys in the middle of the park and he certainly gave a good account of himself in his audition.

If all goes well, Declan Rice and Jude Bellingham will be shoo-ins in England’s midfield for Euro 2024, but then there’s a space left. Let’s see whether Alexander-Arnold can get in there.
