Virgil van Dijk can confidently say that he’s handled almost every top striker in world football.
From Erling Haaland to Robert Lewandowski, Van Dijk can honestly say that he’s had the better of almost any top centre-forward in the game.
Simply put, you have to be someone special in order to cause Van Dijk any sort of problem at the back.
Speaking to Men in Blazers, Van Dijk has been discussing one of his Liverpool teammates who he finds difficult to play against.

The defender spoke about what it’s like to train alongside and play against Darwin Nunez.
“Yeah, Darwin is, in my opinion, a handful for any defender. He keeps running, he’s fast, he can jump, he can do everything as a modern striker. He’s very difficult to play against, I played against him once for Benfica, he’s very direct and he’s very fast. It’s difficult for any defender. He’s learning everyday and he’s getting better. He’s feeling very confident in the group, and that’s a very important trait too,” Van Dijk said.
Darwin Nunez must be a nightmare to face
We genuinely can’t think of a player in world football who would be more frustrating to mark than Darwin Nunez.
Not only does he have the most incredible physical attributes imaginable, but he’s incredibly unpredictable too.
How do you mark a player who doesn’t even know what he’s trying to do himself half the time? It’s an almost impossible task.
Nunez is faster and stronger than almost any centre-back in the world, but it’s how erratic and unpredictable he is that makes him such a pain to play against.
We really don’t envy any defender who has to play against Nunez, let alone training against him every day.
