Liverpool assistant boss Pep Lijnders has confirmed that Alexis Mac Allister will miss Saturday’s clash against Arsenal.

Mikel Arteta will be hoping to pick up a rare win at Anfield over the weekend to extend his side’s lead at the top of the Premier League.

Arsenal leapfrogged Liverpool over the weekend with a 2-0 win over Brighton, while Jurgen Klopp’s side were held to a goalless draw against Manchester United.

The Reds were lacking creativity in the middle of the park on Sunday and failed to break down a resilient United backline.

Alexis Mac Allister has missed Liverpool’s last two league games after picking up a knee injury against Sheffield United.

And Klopp’s assistant, Pep Lijnders, has confirmed the 24-year-old faces a spell on the sidelines until the new year.

Mac Allister set to miss Arsenal clash

Speaking to the media ahead of Liverpol’s League Cup quarter-final against West Ham tomorrow, Lijnders shared an update on Mac Allister’s fitness.

“In the New Year, that is possible, but we play on January 1, so we’ll see.”as quoted by the Liverpool Echo

Mac Allister had largely been used in a deeper-lying midfield role at Liverpool this term. But the £35 million man had done a decent job given the fact he’s more comfortable playing further up the pitch.

It’s a huge blow for Liverpool to be without the Argentine over the festive period, especially with Arsenal coming to town on Saturday.

The Gunners don’t exactly boast a brilliant record at Anfield though, having not managed a win there in the league since 2012.

Arsenal will be hoping to put a huge marker down by picking up a rare win in Merseyside.

Arteta’s side have been the best of the bunch so far this term and will be aiming to capitalise on Manchester City’s shaky start.
