Gabri Veiga has now been speaking about his move to the Saudi Pro League – amid strong interest from Liverpool last summer.
The 21-year-old made the comments when chatting to AS in Spain.
So, what did Gabri Veiga say after being heavily linked with Liverpool in 2023? Let’s take a look…
Gabri Veiga feels he was right to join Al-Ahli
Well – according to Fabrizio Romano – Liverpool were genuinely keen to sign the Spaniard from Celta Vigo last summer after his stunning 2022/23 campaign.
Ben Jacobs of CBS Sports added that senior figures at Anfield even spoke to Rafa Benitez – Manager of Celta Vigo at the time – to discuss a move for Veiga.
Eventually, the Spain U21 international opted to join Roberto Firmino at Al-Ahli in Saudi Arabia, a decision which carried plenty of criticism.
Real Madrid No.8 Toni Kroos even labelled it an “embarrassing” move – suggesting the youngster was only thinking about the money.
Nevertheless, Veiga believes he was “100%” right to get involved with the Saudi Pro League.
The man from Porriño told AS: “I was focused on finishing a dream season, which in the end got a little complicated there. It depends on many factors and the market is not easy at all, but I already told you that in August a situation arises and I make the decision that I think is most appropriate. I’m 100% sure it was the right one. It is also a topic that helps you mature and spend your first summer moving like this. I think it was good for everyone.”

So far this season, the Al-Ahli No.24 has netted four goals while assisting a further three in 16 Saudi Pro League outings.
Liverpool will be satisfied
In our view, Liverpool will be pleased with how their recruitment materialised last summer.
The Reds overhauled their midfield with a bargain £35m move for Alexis Mac Allister – which people inside Anfield are delighted about, according to Fabrizio Romano.

While it was sad to see Liverpool miss out on Veiga at the time, his efforts in Saudi Arabia have done little to make anybody at Anfield feel genuinely regretful about losing out.
