Liverpool may be fully focused on their title challenge right now, but they do need to have one eye on the end of the season.
Indeed, while winning the league this season is, of course, the main goal, the fact of the matter is that they have a huge job on their hands this summer in finding a new manager.
Jurgen Klopp is leaving at the end of the season, and finding the right replacement is a huge job that the Reds have to undertake.
Speaking on The Debrief, Fabrizio Romano has shared an update on the Reds’ search for a new manager, and he says that it’s been 100% confirmed to him that Xabi Alonso is someone they want to go after.

Romano shared what he knows about the Spaniard.
“Liverpool remain very interested in Xabi Alonso – they keep having contacts, but they also want to be respectful because it’s an important season for Bayer Leverkusen and they don’t want to disturb them. Still, it’s 100% confirmed that Liverpool want to go for Alonso. He’s not the only name on their list, but they are well informed on his contract situation – there is not a proper clause, but a gentleman’s agreement with the club.
I’m not sure any concrete talks are imminent because of Leverkusen’s situation, but for sure Alonso is at the top of Liverpool’s list – he’s not the only one, but he’s a strong candidate for the Liverpool job,” Romano said.
Makes the most sense
It’s not at all surprising to hear this.
Alonso would be the number one candidate for any top job in world football at the moment it feels.
He’s a young, exciting, emerging manager and he’s doing an incredible job with Bayer Leverkusen right now.
As a former Liverpool player, this one makes the world of sense, and, in our view, Alonso would be a fantastic option to replace Jurgen Klopp.
This is certainly one to keep an eye on as the Klopp-era comes to an end.
