The Liverpool captain isn’t giving the game away entirely but did say work is continuing on a new deal to keep him on Merseyside beyond the current season.
Liverpool appear well on their way to winning their 20th domestic league title despite the disappointment of Sunday’s sub-par performance and 3-2 defeat at Fulham.
Despite that, though, there are plenty of concerns and question marks as the offseason looms, with three key stars on expiring contracts and a widespread belief they also need to strengthen at a number of positions.
On the contract front, captain Virgil van Dijk is one of the players whose current deal ends when the current season does—but he says there’s been progress.
“There is progress, yeah,” Van Dijk said when asked about his contract situation following Sunday’s match. “We’ll see. These are internal discussions and we’ll see.”
It’s not a lot to go on, but it’s as close to an update from someone actually in the know as we’ve had in some time when it comes to Van Dijk’s contract situation.
There has also been little insight into the cases of Mohamed Salah or Trent Alexander-Arnold, though most still believe Salah will sign while Alexander-Arnold seems determined to join Real Madrid on a free transfer.
“I love the club and I love the fans and we couldn’t reward them [against Fulham],” Van Dijk added, “but I want them to be there Sunday again and make [Anfield] amazing like always.”
