There are some reports out of Spain that Real Madrid are not interested in Virgil van Dijk, despite the fact that one of the best defenders in the world would conceivably be available for a free.
As we’ve seen with the ongoing Trent Alexander-Arnold saga, and as we’ve seen with previous players like Luis Suarez and Philippe Coutinho, when one of the Spanish giants wants a player, they’re not shy about using every dirty trick in the transfer playbook to get them.
The fact that Real Madrid is openly saying “nah, never wanted him anyway,” is a pretty clear indication that the club put out feelers (and they would be insane not to) only to be rebuffed by the Dutch international.
Now, that doesn’t mean that Van Dijk will definitely be signing a new contract with The Reds, but that seems to be the most likely outcome if he’s telling Los Blancos to jog on.
Throughout the year, the general feeling was that Van Dijk and Mohamed Salah are likely to extend their stays on Merseyside, and that continues to be the case, despite the 2024-25 season dwindling down.
